Literature Text

You sat quietly near the corner of the orphanage, playing with your dolls alone. The other kids were running around, screaming and yelling happily, ignoring the volunteers' calls to quiet down. You rolled your eyes, making your doll slowly dance with the other.

When you noticed how quiet it had gotten, you looked up to see a brown haired woman talking to the lady at the adoption counter. So she wanted to adopt? You turned away, knowing that she'd never pick you over all the fun kids.

She nodded to the lady before walking over and through the children, who cheered and clung to her legs. She laughed heartily, patting their heads and commenting on how sweet and cute they were.

You watched her, and looked down once she spotted you. You saw her brown boots in front of your vision, and looked up. The woman crouched, smiling at you.

"Hi there. I'm Hanji, what's your name?" She asked. You deemed her friendly and kind, so you smiled back.

"I'm _______." You said quietly. She smiled bigger.

"Well, _______, would you like to come live with me?" She asked, and your eyes went wide. She was actually picking you?

You grinned, showing off a few missing teeth. "I would love too, Miss Hanji!" You cried happily, and she laughed, scooping you up into her arms.

"I have a feeling we're going to get along well." She said, and you hugged her close with your dolls clutched in your hand. Hanji walked up to the lady on the counter, balancing you on her hip while she signed various documents before thanking the lady and walking out.

She helped you into the back of her nice car, buckling you up safely before she got in herself and started to drive.

You stared out the window, smiling as you waved goodbye to the orphanage. "Miss Hanji?"

"Yes, _______?" She asked, glancing at you in the mirror.

"Why did you adopt me?" You wondered aloud, turning to look at her.

"Well, I have a condition where I can't have my own kids, so I came to adopt a kid to raise." She explained calmly. Your mouth fell into an 'O' shape as you nodded slowly.

"I'm sorry, Miss Hanji." You said sympathetically. She chuckled lightly.

"It's alright, ______. And you don't have to call me Miss Hanji anymore, call me Mom." She told you, and you nodded.

The car ride was filled with chatting and laughter as she drove you to your new home. When she pulled into the driveway, you grew a bit nervous. What if she didn't like you, and she took you back? Hanji got out of the car, helping you out and holding your hand as she walked you inside.

She gave you a little tour, showing you the living room, the kitchen, the bathroom, her room, your room, and all the other stuff. You liked your room, but you wished it had some color instead of white walls like the orphanage. Hanji promised you two would be able to paint it whatever color you wanted.

A week passed, and you happily settled in with Hanji. It was taking a little while for you to get used to calling her Mom, but you were gradually slipping in. Hanji told you her friends would be coming to meet you soon, and you were a bit worried. What if they didn't like you, and told Hanji to send you back. She gently soothed your worries, and you went to your room to change into some nicer clothes.

The doorbell rang, and you looked toward your door. Hanji cheered, yelling "They're here!" and you slowly walked out of your room, stopping at the end of the hall and peering around the corner.

Hanji opened the door with a huge grin, inviting some people in. Your eyes widened as they caught on a short, ebony haired figure.

You immediately liked him, and you wanted to get to know him. He had a bored expression on his face, with sharp, gray-blue eyes and defined muscles. Your cheeks felt warm, and you hid around the corner some more.

"So where's the little girl?" A tall blonde man asked Hanji. She giggled, turning to you.

"Come on, ______, there's nothing to be afraid of. These are my friends, come meet them!"

Hanji introduced you to the tall blonde named Erwin, who was very polite. You met Mike, who sniffed you, and you met Levi, the ebony haired man who was grumpy.

All day, you hung out with Hanji and her friends, but you stuck close to Levi. You learned he used bad words, and you promised him you wouldn't repeat them to Hanji, and you also learned he didn't like people or being called short. His friends were an exception.

You frowned as it was time for Levi to leave, along with all Hanji's friends. You clung to Levi's legs, sniffling, and everyone went "Awww!"

"Levi, she likes you!" Hanji giggled. Levi sighed, kneeling down to your height.

You sniffled. "I don't want Levi to leave. I like Levi, no, I love Levi!" You said proudly. Levi actually smiled a bit.

"Listen, brat, I like you too. When you're all grown up, and you still like me, come find me, and then we'll talk. Got it?" He said, and you nodded vigorously.

    "I'll always love Levi!"

Levi smiled, ruffling your hair. "Alright, brat." And then he left with the others.

That night, when Hanji put you to be, you kissed her cheek.

    "Goodnight, Mommy."

Hanji grinned wider than she ever had with tears in her eyes. She finally had a daughter of her own.

You sighed, smiling as you spotted exactly who you were looking for at the exact spot you knew they'd be. You, now all grown up at 24, remembered the promise a certain someone made to you 16 years ago.

You strutted right up to Levi, and he glanced at you. His silvery eyes turned away, but you saw the smirk curling over his lips. He stayed silent.

"How old are you, Levi?" You asked.

    "34."

    "Ten years older than me."

Levi rolled his eyes. "Wow, excellent observation, captain obvious."

You smiled, sitting down next to him. He sighed, tilting his head back over the end of the bench.

    "So you remember?"

"You can't forget love, Levi." You answered.

He chuckled lightly. "I know that, I meant the other thing."

You sighed, smiling. "Yeah. I remember."

Levi smiled, and though it was small, it was there.

"So you remember what I said to you before you passed?"

You grinned, tears springing in your eyes. "Yeah. I remember."

    "Good." Was all Levi said.

You blinked away tears, squeezing Levi's hand with all the strength you had left. He squeezed back, leaning down and kissing your lips softly. They were growing cold.

    "Levi..."

Levi's heart was shattering in his chest.

    "Listen, Levi..."

He wanted you to be okay. He wanted to be free from the Titans and love you and have you by his side always.

The world just didn't work that way.

"Levi, I'm leaving. I want you to know that I love you." You said, your voice weak and hoarse.

Levi felt tears come to his eyes. "_______, I promise that we'll be free someday. We'll live in a world without Titans. We'll meet again, and we'll fall in love again. I'll always love you. I promise." He said, his own voice shaky.

    You laughed weakly. "Okay, Levi."

Levi leaned in, kissing your cold lips once more.
